Floral and citrus scents: when to use them and why

Fruity scents: what they are and how to use them to feel good

Fruity scents are fragrances derived from various fruits, including citrus fruits, tropical fruits, and berries. These scents range from fresh and tart to sweeter notes and form one of the most important families in perfumery and aromatherapy.

What is the difference between a fruity scent and a citrus scent?

Citrus fruits are among the most easily recognizable scents; they all contain natural essential oils used in aromatherapy and cosmetics. Grapefruit, orange, lemon, tangerine, lime, bergamot, and petitgrain are the standout examples in this category. However, other fruity scents must be obtained through synthesis, simply because fruits such as melon, pineapple, apple, and peach do not contain essential oils that can be extracted.

There are exceptional cases, such as osmanthus, from whose flowers an absolute is extracted that evokes the scent of apricot, or blackcurrant, from whose buds an absolute can also be extracted.

In any case, fruity scents—especially citrus ones—have a refreshing and energizing effect, in addition to other benefits worth exploring.

How can you use citrus and fruity scents to feel better?

Here are some ideas for using fruity scents depending on the setting and the mood you want to create.

  • If you're at work, scents with hints of lemon and orange have an energizing effect that boosts concentration and helps keep your spirits up even when you're stressed. These scents are also a great choice if you're about to tackle an hour-long workout at the gym.
  • If you're going to be driving for a long time, fruity scents with a hint of freshness, such as melon, can help create a sense of relaxation and comfort.
  • For children's rooms, any scent with notes of strawberry, cherry, or raspberry creates a fresh, soothing, and cozy atmosphere.
  • After cooking, the scents that best refresh and purify the air are those of citrus fruits such as bergamot or lime.
  • For a dinner at home, other citrus fruits to consider are grapefruit and mandarin, two scents that stimulate the appetite and create a sense of well-being that is sure to enhance the conversation.

Remember that citrus scents also blend perfectly with other scents. You can create combinations that promote relaxation, energy, and optimism. Here are some recommended combinations:

  • Oranges and tangerines pair beautifully with the spicy notes of cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom.
  • For its part, lemon pairs best with the aromatic notes of mint or eucalyptus.

The Hammam Garden has an iconic scent, Pasión de Azahar, in which the fruity citrus notes are enhanced by floral accords that soften them without diminishing their fresh, sparkling character.
