Caring for the skin as a ritual

Treating skincare as a ritual.

Skincare and wellness routines can become rituals that, in addition to their cosmetic benefits, also offer benefits for the mind.

Almost any activity that involves caring for something or someone has a ritualistic dimension that goes beyond what we call a routine. A routine is the repetition of certain actions with a purpose; we brush our teeth to keep them healthy, have a nice smile, or enjoy fresh breath. When we add full attention to the routine and give it value in and of itself, we transform it into a ritual. The ritual focuses primarily on the process; the result is merely a consequence.

Something as simple and everyday as brushing your teeth, taking a shower, or having a cup of tea can be mere routines we repeat without a second thought—or small rituals to which we pay attention, appreciating the benefits they bring us and taking care with every detail. This isn’t a recipe from some New Age book; neuroscience has already studied and confirmed the positive effect rituals have on brain plasticity.

It has long been established that routines involving caring for ourselves, others, or other living beings—whether animals or plants—when performed consciously, free from prejudice or second-guessing, directly influence brain function, how we react to stress, how we perceive our self-esteem, and the image we have of ourselves.

The “garden” philosophy that inspires El Jardín de Hammam stems from a culture in which caring for the body was inextricably linked to caring for the spirit; bathing, oils, and aromas… are not merely a means of cultivating beauty and well-being but also a source of inspiration. The very act of tending a garden is a metaphor for the ritual of care: clearing the soil, providing water and nutrients, and nurturing the different plants to extend their life. Like the earth, the skin is a living organ that needs to be purified, nourished, and strengthened. Furthermore, it is an organ covered in nerve endings, so everything we do for our skin also affects the brain.

Cosmetic rituals, even simple ones, offer an added benefit for mood and mental health, fostering mindfulness, relaxation, and a sense of well-being.

Our collection of rituals, inspired by the garden, combines the cosmetic benefits of natural ingredients—such as 100% plant-based activated charcoal, organically grown extra virgin olive oil, and eucalyptus—with a sense of calm and renewal. Three essential rituals to care for the skin and stimulate the senses: Purify to remove impurities and dead skin cells—it also naturally balances the skin’s microbiome; Nourish to give the skin elasticity and resilience while providing a deep sense of relaxation; Sense to activate the sense of smell, release tension, and leave the skin soft and toned.

Making skincare a ritual is a simple way to cultivate well-being; let’s follow the lessons of the garden, because no one is wiser than nature.
